چکیده

We present a multigrid method for the solution of convection diffusion equations that is based on the combination of recursive substructuring techniques and the discretization on hierarchical bases and generating systems. Robustness of the resulting method, at least for a variety of benchmark problems, is achieved by a partial elimination between certain "coarse grid unknowns". The choice of these coarse grid unknowns is motivated by the physical properties of the convection diffusion equation, but is independent of the actual discretized operator. The resulting algorithm has a memory requirement that grows linearly with the number of unknowns. This also holds for the computational cost of the setup and the individual relaxation cycles. We present numerical examples that indicate that the number of iterations needed to solve a convection diffusion equation is widely independent of the number of unknowns and of the type and strength of the convection field.

An Efficient Parallel Multigrid Solver for 3-D Convection-dominated Problems

Multigrid algorithms are known to be highly efficient in solving systems of elliptic equations. However, standard multigrid algorithms fail to achieve optimal grid-independent convergence rates in solving non-elliptic problems. In many practical cases, the non-elliptic part of a problem is represented by the convection operator. Downstream marching, when it is viable, is the simplest and most e...

A Comparison of Geometric and Algebraic Multigrid for Discrete Convection-diffusion Equations

The discrete convection-diffusion equations obtained from streamline diffusion finite element discretization are solved on both uniform meshes and adaptive meshes. The performance of geometric multigrid method (GMG) and algebraic multigrid method (AMG), both as a solver and as a preconditioner of the generalized minimal residual method (GMRES), are evaluated. Our numerical results show that GMR...

Numerical method for singularly perturbed fourth order ordinary differential equations of convection-diffusion type

In this paper, we have proposed a numerical method for singularly perturbed  fourth order ordinary differential equations of convection-diffusion type. The numerical method combines boundary value technique, asymptotic expansion approximation, shooting method and  finite difference method. In order to get a numerical solution for the derivative of the solution, the given interval is divided  in...

Flexible Multiple Semicoarsening for Three-Dimensional Singularly Perturbed Problems

We present robust parallel multigrid-based solvers for 3D scalar partial differential equations. The robustness is obtained by combining multiple semicoarsening strategies, matrixdependent transfer operators, and a Krylov subspace acceleration. The basis for the 3D preconditioner is a 2D method with multiple semicoarsened grids based on the MG-S method from [C. W. Oosterlee, Appl. Numer. Math.,...

THIS IS A REVISED VERSION OF THE IGPM REPORT Nr. 223 (2002) ENTITLED Convergence Analysis of a Multigrid Solver for a Finite Element Method Applied to Convection-Diffusion Problems

The paper presents a convergence analysis of a multigrid solver for a system of linear algebraic equations resulting from the disretization of a convection-diffusion problem using a finite element method. We consider piecewise linear finite elements in combination with a streamline diffusion stabilization . We analyze a multigrid method that is based on canonical inter-grid transfer operators, ...
